Business Aircraft Demand Expected to Continue

Hanover—World demand for business aircraft shows no indication of slackening, and some marketing officials for U. S. manufacturers believe that the historic short-term cyclical sales pattern for business aircraft may have ended. Business aircraft firms exhibiting at the Hanover air show in late April and early May all were intent on pushing their share of the international business aircraft market upward and of increasing the percentage of their total production devoted to export sales.

Washington—Congress is split over the continued development of both the Army/Martin Marietta Pershing 2 mobile tactical nuclear ballistic missile and the Air Force/General Dynamics Tomahawk ground-launched cruise missile. The two battlefield nuclear weapons are being developed separately by the services for a similar mission—to deliver quick-reaction nuclear strikes in order to free for other missions the dual-capable North Atlantic Treaty Organization aircraft committed to nuclear alert.

Livermore, Calif.—Powerful laser system is being readied for a three-year experimental program that will help shape the course of future energy-source developments in the U. S. The $25-million, 10,000-joule laser, named Shiva, is the fifth in a series of increasingly powerful neodymium:glass laser systems built here at the University of California Lawrence Livermore Laboratory to investigate applications of highpower lasers for both civil and military uses.
